Portugal's history has much in common with that of other European nations. Its origins date back to the early Middle Ages and through the centuries it became a world power, thanks to the courage of its sailors, and during the called Era of Discovery.
However, due to numerous factors such as the policy of the Philippine Dynasty (1580-1640), the earthquake 1755, it suffered occupation during the Napoleonic wars or coup produced by the independence in 1822 of Brazil, Portugal began to lose large part of the power and worldwide recognition it had.
Already in the s XX, more specifically, in 1910, a revolution finally ended with the traditional monarchy. But after sixteen years with an unstable parliamentarian republic dictator Antonio de Oliveira Salazar took power for forty-eight years.
In 1974 there were great changes that began with the so-called Carnation Revolution. Led by the left, this revolution made possible a series of democratic reforms consenting, the following year, independence dae the former African colonies. Today, Portugal is one of the founding members of the NATO and belongs to the European Union
